Introduction
Dr Diane Divett (Ph.D; M.Ed [counselling]; B.Ed, Dip Tchng), one of the pastors of C1 Church, is the originator and developer of the holistic counselling theory and practice called Refocussing, which has as its central component the use of ‘God Spaces’ to connect to God.
“Refocussing and God Spaces(TM) a holistic counselling theory and practice: An integration of psychology and theology to facilitate encounters with God in and beyond therapy” was authored by Diane Divett and published by LAP in 2011 (see http://www.amazon.com/Refocussing-Spaces-holistic-counselling-practice/dp/3844334750/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1327628573&sr=1-5)
About Godspaces
‘God Spaces’ is merely the name Dr Diane Divett gave to identify the ‘spaces’ that thousands of people described when they were questioned while connecting to God. This social scientific discovery is clearly documented in her research (Divett, 1994, 2004). Simply put, ‘God Spaces’ are a spiritual, metaphysical ‘space’ that Dr Divett suggests all people have. She suggests this in keeping with what is alluded to in Romans chapter 1, where Paul says ‘everyone knows about God’; and which the early philosopher/theologian Pascal describes as ‘a God shaped vacuum in every man’.
However, what is unique about ‘God Spaces’ is that Dr Divett, after discovering and then further researching what God Spaces are and how they can be used, went on to develop a ‘methodology’ that empowers people to use their own God Spaces to: locate (find), access (experience) and develop (describe) what they as individuals uniquely know and experience of God as He reveals himself to them. In turn, her own research and that of team of other post-graduate researchers has gone on to verify that as people are taught to use their God Spaces to locate, access and develop their ‘revelations’ and experiences of God, remarkable healings result.
So remarkable are these healings that documented case studies conducted by students at post-graduate level clearly describe physical healings, emotional and relational healings, and even deliverance from demonic and evil influences.
Documentation of people’s stories also detail remarkable life changes, as research shows that as people are taught to use their ‘God Spaces’ to gain access to God’s resources, ‘the plans that He has for them that are not of evil but are of a future and hope’ (Jeremiah 29:11) become a reality!
About Refocussing
Refocussing, the theory and practice has been developed, researched and successfully used by Pastor and therapist Dr Diane Divett. And as the name suggests, the theory is about focus and refocus.
Specifically, Dr Divett believes that while most theories in psychology attempt to help people resolve their unmet, unfulfilled or maladjusted needs; they do not go far enough. While psychology may help people to focus on ‘needs’, using various theoretical and practical methods, what she suggests as being necessary to facilitate true wholeness is a way to refocus on the objective Other, namely God, as our fundamental resource. Like Albert Einstein, who said – ‘The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we first created them’, Dr Divett believes a different perspective – a refocus is required. Therefore in the developing of Refocussing she created a series of programmes that help people;
-Find God so they can experience His empowering Presence, and then
-Shift to a new space of understanding, insight and empowerment.
-From this space decisions about vision, purpose, dreams, future and healthy holistic living can be made.
This is entirely in keeping with Jeremiah 29:11 “The plans I have for you says the Lord are plans of good and not of evil, of a future and a hope”. Refocussing has many components and applications.
